Winter Break is fast approaching and I know that the Barrett staff joins me in wishing all our families a wonderful holiday. December was a month replete with good cheer at Barrett. The December 3 Barrett Barnes and Noble Day demonstrated that our children still delight in choosing books and sharing them with their friends. The following week, kindergarten teachers hosted Kindergarten Language Arts Days for parents on December 7 and 8. Parents learned about the expectations for reading and writing for kindergartners and how they could support their children’s reading at home. Family BINGO was such a huge success that we have now moved it into the gym to accommodate the crowds of families having fun together. And Project Discovery was very busy exploring our national wildlife refuge system while getting ready for our annual science fair in February. In our classrooms students explored holiday customs and traditions and shared food from around the world. Check out our website at http://apsva.us/Domain/465 to find out more about these and other classroom activities.
The new year 2012 will bring many school activities for parents and children to enjoy together. Be sure to mark your calendars for these upcoming events in January: School reopens after Winter Break – January 3, PTA meeting on January 10, Family Math Night on January 16, Family Gym Night on January 20 and our Winter Concert on January 26.
Note, too, that there are two school holidays for students in January: January 16 - Martin Luther King’s Birthday and January 23 - Teacher Grade Preparation Day.
My best wishes to every Barrett family for a wonderful 2012. I hope that using our new table tents and volunteering to help with school activities and events as often as possible will be included as two of every parent’s New Year’s resolutions!
