More Seats for More Students: Next Community Update
Wed, May 2 – 7-8:30 p.m. in the School Board Meeting Room

Arlington parents and community members are invited to the next update on the “More Seats for More Students” capacity planning process. The meeting will be held this week on Wed, May 2 from 7-8:30 p.m. in the School Board Meeting Room at the Education Center. (1426 N. Quincy St.)

At the community update, staff will present the outcomes of the April 25 School Board work session, review the capacity planning process to date, and provide information about the next steps moving towards the development of the capital improvement plan (CIP) this spring. The meeting will consist of a staff presentation and a question and answer panel.

The event is open to the community. Simultaneous translation services will be provided.

Background
APS has held four "More Seats for More Students" Community Forums that provided an overview to parents and the community about the process that is underway to develop an action plan that addresses the current and future capacity needs for the school division.
APS is facing increased enrollment for the foreseeable future. In the past five years, APS’ enrollment has grown by 3,200 students, approximately 18%. By 2013, APS will exceed capacity system-wide and face a deficit of 300 seats. By 2017, APS faces an even greater shortage of 3,500 seats. As the division continues to exceed capacity limits, APS has been using a variety of solutions to create additional teaching space including adding relocatable classrooms at a number of schools until more permanent solutions can be implemented.
