Cupcake Map of the World

H-B Students are Building the World!

Eleanor Reed's eighth grade World Geography students learned about geography and world issues by building a map of the world out of cupcakes. The students each chose a country to write a report about, focusing on one particular issue in that country. They made signs for their cupcakes on the map, which corresponded to their individual reports.

Students began constructing the map in the gym at 9:00 a.m. April 19. Most of the almost 3000 cupcakes were donated by students and their families, but Harris Teeter at the Lee-Harrison Center and Sprinkles Cupcakes in Georgetown also made significant donations.

Students displayed the map and explained their research issues to students in the afternoon, and then to the public later that evening. Visitors who made a donation took home cupcakes. The money will go to the Arlington Food Assistance Center and the U.N. World Food Program.
