{fly wom} Aquatics Management
The Aquatics Program is managed by the Aquatics Management Office which is located in the Facilities and Operations Department. The office oversees the facility management and operations of the three Arlington public indoor swimming pools, as well as the APS Swimming and Water Safety Instructional Program. Our goal is to provide instructional and recreational aquatic opportunities to residents of all ages by supporting a variety of activities that promote healthy water-friendly lifestyles, confidence, and comfort. You may contact Helena Machado, Aquatics Coordinator at 703-228-6263 or by e-mail at: hmachado@arlington.k12.va.us. Arlington Public Schools (APS) is responsible for the school's instructional program and for the management and operations of the three facilities. {lessons}

DPRCR is responsible for community programs including pre-school, youth and adult learn to swim programs, water exercise classes, the Arlington Aquatic Club (AAC), the county sponsored USA Swim Team, and the Arlington Master Swim Team.
The school swimming instructional program uses the pools during the school days. The pools are open to the community year round during early morning, mid-day, evening and weekends. Please see the related links for Pool Operating Schedule, Fee Schedule and Pool Rules. The new facility contains a 25 meter x 25 yard competition pool equipped with a moveable bulkhead dividing a semi-coupled diving area. The diving area contains two 1meter springboards. The pool's moveable bulkhead allows us to set up for Water Polo games and to separate the diving well and instructional areas from the lap lanes. Colorado Timing system and scoreboard completes the make up of this new facility. There is also a separate instructional pool, a wet classroom, and a spectator area with capacity for 175 spectators overlooking the pools (and the vantage point from which the two photographs were taken). The locker room facilities offer individual shower stalls and there are four family changing areas, two of which are fully equipped and handicap accessible. Click here to see a diagram of the pool layout: W-L New Pool Diagram.
The pool is located on N. Quincy St. behind the Planetarium and Education Center. As Phase III (demolition of the old sections and landscaping) continues through the summer, parking for W-L pool patrons will be limited to several spots between the Education Center and the old W-L building, the top level of the I-66 Parking Deck, and Quincy Park, (located at the corner of Washington Blvd. and N. Quincy St). Click here to see a site plan showing the location of the pool entrance and available parking: Site Plan
The facility is open and ready to welcome swimmers. Patrons may observe some construction activity in the pool and surrounding areas as well as all around the campus. We apologize in advance for this inconvenience, and thank you for your patience as we continue to address some minor construction issues.

Swimming and Water Safety Instructional Program
The instructional program serves as an integral and vital component of health physical education co-curricular activities in the Arlington Public Schools. The program teaches safety awareness, develops basic swimming skills, and enhances proficiency levels of all aquatic skills. It also improves personal and community safety skills and helps students develop a commitment to lifetime fitness.
Students in third and fourth grade receive five hours of swimming and water safety instruction during the school year. Ninth and tenth graders spend three to four week of their physical education time at the swimming pool, and participate in swimming, water safety, small craft safety, fitness, and aquatic recreation. All students learn swimming and water safety skills that are appropriate to their proficiency level and that enhance their ability to participate fully and safely in aquatic activities. The program includes fitness swimming, small craft and water recreation, and competition. The American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program provides the framework for our swimming and water safety curriculum, our instructors are certified and authorized by the program co-sponsor, Arlington County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Interscholastic Athletic Swimming and Diving
Arlington Secondary School students may also participate in interscholastic swimming and diving. Middle school students receive instruction and coaching in swimming and diving and engage in athletic competition among the five APS schools. High school students participate in regional athletic competition as part of the Virginia High School League (VHSL). Yorktown High School Girls Swim Team won the title of District Champions in 2005-06 and 2006-07. The Athletic Program provides opportunities for students to demonstrate their swimming and diving proficiency through competitive events as well as an opportunity for students to excel and experience success, while promoting and applying concepts of team work, sportsmanship, respect for others, and high standards of conduct and honor.
